When coaching our boys at various levels and in different sports, when the score wasn’t kept officially, (the kids always kept score), the intensity and focus on the game was not as high.  The quality of the game was raised when the score was kept.

There’s a saying - "Performance that's measured, improves.  Performance that’s measured and reported on, improves exponentially.”

This is a true and powerful statement.  Keeping score changes the way we approach the game.

Wouldn’t this same principle apply in business?  Measuring and reporting on key activities for the team to be aware of will raise the bar.  Why then is it so difficult to put into practice?

The challenge is twofold: discipline and knowing what to measure.

Companies that get this concept and actually do it, reap the benefits of improved efficiencies, increased profits, team accountability, course adjustments, and enhanced corporate value.

The discipline needed begins with a decision.  So, decide today to start the process.

Relationships are foundational in the building of your business.

A saying I’ve heard is ‘it’s not what you know, but who you know’.  Jeffrey Gitomer says, ‘It’s not who you know, but who knows you’.

Now it is important to be qualified at what you do…to deliver on your promises…to provide remarkable service.

However, if no one knows about your business, it’s going to be tough to exist for any length of time.

Three groups can assist to ‘expand’ the list of people who know you.


Satisfied customers are a great way to meet other qualified prospects who need your product or service.

Existing customers can speak to your performance; understand your service; appreciate the quality; and have a network of business owners who may need the same.

Make the effort this week to ask at least one existing, satisfied customer to make an introduction.

Centers of influence

Well-connected business leaders in the community have influence.

Identify two existing contacts that have influence with other leaders.  Schedule a 20-minute meeting over coffee.  Focus first on who they may want to connect with or how you may help them; then make sure they understand who would be a good connection for your business.

Let them know a specific company or person you’d like an introduction.

If you don’t know anyone in this category; join an organization or volunteer to help a not-for-profit.  The attitude to serve and help others will get noticed by those on the board or in leadership.

Caution:  if all you care about is getting attention, people will see it clearly.  Serve with the proper motives and you will help those in need and build credibility with community leaders.

Referral sources

Qualified professionals who work with a similar client base may be a good source of introductions. Commercial bankers, insurance agents, human resource professionals, attorneys or CPA’s may be a good relationship for you.

When you’ve identified natural referring sources, get to know them and what introductions are beneficial for them.

Seek to proactively and generously provide them with like-minded professionals they may benefit from knowing.

With each of these categories, the BEST way to increase your prospects and relationships is to help others increase theirs FIRST.
