Ready To Plan?

- Wednesday, December 09, 2015

As we are approaching the end of 2015, it’s time to be planning for next year.

Here are some questions to answer to assist in the process:

Where are you now?

On any journey it’s important to know your starting point.  If you want to prepare a plan, you must first know where you are.

Write a description of your company today.  Include clear descriptions of the: culture/work environment, products and/or services offered, revenue, key metrics in all areas (sales, operations, service, finance, human resources), key financial ratios, number of employees, and any other pertinent information.

A good test of the completeness of this exercise is if you handed the document to a stranger, would it give them a clear understanding of the current status of your company?

Where do you want to go?

Goals, objectives, strategies…pick one that resonates with you.  The key is to know where you are headed.  There’s a saying I’ve heard (back to the trip analogy): if you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.

It is critical to know where you want to go and why you want to go.

The answer to this question is multiple phased: five years, three years, and one year.

Write a very descriptive narrative that states where you are going at each one of those milestones covering many of the issues identified above in the first question (where are you now?); make it vivid, vibrant, and engaging.  Clearly state the benefits of reaching your destination.

How are you going to get there?

Creating a plan of action will increase the probability of reaching your desired destination.  These are the specific tactics to implement to ensure the accomplishment of the one-year goals/objectives/strategies.

This plan of action should cover all areas of the company and be Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic/Relevant, and Timely (SMART).

This plan should break the activities down monthly, weekly and daily.  Again it is important to write these down and list the benefits of implementing this plan.

The journey you are on will have ups and downs and twists beyond your plans; however, this exercise will provide perspective in dealing with the obstacles.
